Shock Absorber Replacement

Since I posted on this last year my F passed the MOT first time with no mention of the shocks which is interesting, however it had this years MOT today and has failed on (amongst a number of others things) a leaking O/S rear shock and advisories on the others for misting, so seems like time to replace the whole lot.

I'm still considering whether to pay more for the Monroes or get cheaper OEM versions...

Anyone got any more experience of the TRW shocks or other budget alternatives they can share with me?

OK I decided to just to for the TRW's as they were £66 cheaper and i'm going to be spending a load getting through this MOT!

I will let you know how they are, but I'm sure they will feel better than my 17 your old Monroe's and I won't really be able to compare them to new Monroe's as I don't know what they feel like so ignorance is bliss I suppose...

In terms of the ride comfort of an MGF the amount of 'gas' remaining in the suspension spheres will have a bigger effect.

Yes so I've heard. I've been thinking about getting my spheres regassed here...

4 new TRW shocks/dampers now fitted and all seems good.

I spent the £66 saving on a set of poly bushes!

I have the same misting issue on my 2001 F. What is a garage likely to charge me to do the job? It's just the rears that are misting. They've been like that for two MOTs

Shouldn't be too much I sourced a pair of rears for £45 new and been quoted about £50/60 for the labour

All mine had been advisories for misting then this MOT one failed as leaking and another on the bush so I decided to replace them all. The garage that did my MOT quoted £100 labour to fit all 4 and £215 for some KYB dampers, but I brought a full set of TRW dampers for £115 and fitted them myself. I went for TRW because Rimmer Bros sell them so they can't be bad. The fronts are ok to fit, the rears are harder due to access so I removed the coolant tank, ECU and air box to get enough room and tightening the top nuts is tricky as I had to hold the bolt with some mole grips and use a rachet spanner...

Well my misting rears didn't even get a mention in the latest MOT. I'll not worry for another year or so.
