Fitting Exhaust - Seized Nut

Post by beefio » Sun Apr 16, 2017 2:42 pm

I tried fitting an exhaust, relatively straight forward however one of the bolts for the cat/down pipe is completely seized and it's the top one which is difficult to access and I can only apply so much pressure as I don't want to damage the flexi joint, what's the easiest way to get this off?

Also are bolts on the original cat fixed or do they come out?

Well I've managed to round the nut off, so I've brought a dremel and will try to cut it off!

What about a nut splitter? I'm going to get one for when I want to change my exhaust

I got a cheap one but it didn't work.

Someone has put one different nut on which is flanged so the nut cracker doesn't sit central on the nut, I ended up just damaging the nut and making it unusable.

The dremel has turned up so will give that a go this weekend. If that's won't work then I may just have to cut the cat of with an angle grinder as it's on it way out and I have a replacement anyway...

if you have an angle grinder just cut the nuts off the down pipe to cat connection & take the cat & back box off in one go, I've done this several times.

I can't get my angle grinder to the top nut as there isn't enough room. That's why I got the dremel which will hopefully fit in the space...

IIRC I cut through the centre of the nut, like a screwdriver slot when I did the top one, then just chiselled the nut off.

After much arsing around I managed to cut the nut off with my new dremel, handy little tool and I'm sure it'll be useful in future!

You have to laugh, the amount of effort I've gone through to get this bloody nut off and then while under there I thought I would change the rear ARB bush and as I tried to undo the nut the bolt sheered straight off like it was plastic...perfect!

Also I've now realised that the joint in the mk1 to mk2 adapter pipe is blowing...so I also need to fix that now...

Happy days!
