Are these pads dead?

The surface of these Yellow Stuff rear pads have broken up a bit and are uneven.

Are they still usable?

Yes. I brought a new set of fronts on eBay and they gave me these rears too...

Well, yes if you want to. If they stop the wheels turning, work okay, they should "adapt" to your existing rotors.

But - best option is new rotors, new pads, check caliper sliders, pad locating areas give a bit of movement/slack, check pistons are free, lube all the moving parts with suitable lube, and - you might well get the same stopping effect as above

It all depends on you. If your existing rear rotors are glazed, ribbed, rusty etc then It's worth giving those old pads a whirl until the time comes when you have to replace.

Brake efficiency has nothing to with appearance. MoT test on the rollers only checks efficiency, balance etc - if okay, brakes are okay.

My thoughts exactly, my discs are a bit ribbed and rusty so thought I could try these pads and see how they fair until I replace with the new MGR discs I've got in the loft...

I would never fit second hand pads, you have no idea of their past.
