Newbie help wanted

Post by RN558 » Sat Oct 07, 2017 5:22 pm

Hello

I hope that somebody on her can help me, been looking in for a while waiting till I had the car I wanted. Just bought a Mk1 MGF. The car runs well and is in very good condition overall. The concern I have is that the area above the coolant tank on the boot lid is getting 'hot'. The temperature gauge is showing normal and the cap on the coolant tank has just been replaced ( as have the coolant pipes under the car) and the system has been bled.
Is this 'hot' spot normal or should I be looking at anything else ?

Thanks for any suggestions.

It will get hot as the engine bay does and hot air rises, if the engine bay air temp sensor isn’t constantly activating the cooling fan which you will be able to hear, then I wouldn’t worry about it...however if that sensor/fan is faulty then that could be the cause of the problem. The temp sensor is at the top right by the coolant tank, if you blow a hot hair drier on it long enough then it should activate...

Thanks for that I am more re-assured now - will see how it goes tomorrow, listening out for the fan on the way to Wales. First proper outing.

Not sure if you’ll hear the fan while driving but definitely do when your stationary or standing by the car...

You won't hear the fan while driving. Just keep an eye on the temps & you'll be fine.

The attached link will show you how to check your engine bay fan, its shows TF but the procedure is the same.
