Changes to French Speed limits
For the information of anyone considering touring in France later this year, be advised that the rural speed limit on two-way roads, currently at 90kph will change to 80kph with effect from 1st July this year, except in areas where there is already a lower limit. Motorways & dual carriageways are unaffected.
Bonne route!

Re: Changes to French Speed limits
FWIW, read this on the Lotus forum last week, from a guy in Carrières-sur-Seine.
'It is still being thought about, but there is a meeting next week of the Comité interministériel de sécurité routière and they will make a decision. However it wont be implemented next week, such changes take time, whether or not they set a date at this meeting is anyone's guess.'
This proposal along with a discussion about a zero limit for alcohol apparently.

Re: Changes to French Speed limits
Thanks for the info, Bruce!
This comes quite handy indeed for the Rhein Tour in August, as parts of it will go through France (Alsace region).
I’m always puzzled why we can't get equal speed limits throughout Europe, like 30 (20) in living areas, 50 (30) on through roads, 90 (55) on highways and 130 (80) on motorways. Yes, I’d even be willing to scrap the unlimited motorways here in Germany, I’m rarely going any faster than that anyway.

Re: Changes to French Speed limits
The advance warning signs for fixed speed cameras and average speed camera locations in France are being upgraded. Here are the new signs:
However... be aware that there is no legal requirement in France for the placing of such warning signs. Usually though they will be 4-600 metres in advance of a fixed camera.
The one on the left could be for an average speed camera length of road or one where mobile enforcement takes place.
Bonne route!

Re: Changes to French Speed limits
There ia a suggestion that the rules on mobile phone use in France are going to be firmed up. Currently it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless it is hands free. In addition listening to the phone or on board media whilst wearing headphones or ear buds or an ear bluetooth are similarly illegal whether you are driving a vehicle or riding a motorbike scooter or pedal cycle. The only exemption is a crash helmet specifically equipped.
Currently the penalty is a fine of 135€ plus three points but they are looking at giving the police/ gendarmerie the power to impose an immediate disqualification if the phone usage is coupled with further offences affecting the safety of the user or other road users, for example alcohol, drugs, speeding, careless or dangerous driving etc. I will update if there's any more news, but this is being considered for 2019.

Re: Changes to French Speed limits
Again, thanks for the update.
Have no issue with the phone/headphones/buds etc proposals - to me it's unbelievable the some road users are prepared to virtually eliminate their sense of hearing whilst on the road.
As far as the speed limit change is concerned.....
.....just a pity it's a week before LMC

Re: Changes to French Speed limits
The use of headphones, earbuds and/or bluetooth earpieces is ALREADY illegal in France. The only exemption is for a motorcycle helmet with built in earphones (such as those intercoms used by bikers including the Police).
