Egine Bay Temperature Warning Light
Hi all
Had my 2000 F VVC for a few years and never had any overheating problems and the engine bay temp warning light hadn’t ever come on before even during peak summer and hard driving, but recently the engine bay temp warning light has come on a number of times when it’s been really cold outside and I’m just cruising around.
I drove it on the motorway the otherday for 2 hours fine, but then on the way back the light came on, the oil and water temp were both normal and didn’t rise.
The only thing I can think is maybe the engine bay fan isn’t working, is there a way for me to test this?

Is there an engine bay temp warning light?
The dash gauge for coolant is a bit vague, "normal" is any where from 82 to 110'.

OK, there is an engine bay over temp warning light on mk2's, my guess is an over sensitive sensor.

Re: Egine Bay Temperature Warning Light
Yes I could just replace the sensor.
The engine bay certainly doesn’t seem any hotter than normal...
Just concerned the engine bay fan isn’t working.
Guess I could use a hair dry on the sensor to set it if and then see it the fan kicks in...
Does the engine bay fan actually work? Does it blowing fresh air in, or suck hot air out?

Easier still, just unplug the sensor with the ignition on and the fan should come on. If it doesn't; it may be seized or the fuse blown or both. Reach down and check that the fan can still rotate before doing the test.

Re: Egine Bay Temperature Warning Light
The other problem is that the engine bay fan can seize, so you may find over-heat conditions when stuck in slow moving traffic.

Yes I read that but mine was working fine that’s what I found weird can couldn’t understand why the engine bay was heating up when the weather was cold, and the warning light wasn’t going out at all...new sensor sorted it though which I was well pleased with!

Re: Egine Bay Temperature Warning Light
So a couple of weeks on and the bloody warning light has started coming on again, this time even worse, sometimes comes on literally seconds after turning the engine on.
The water and oil temp gauge readings are completely normal and the car seems absolutely fine and not overheating.
The fan is coming on but the light doesn’t go off on its own.
Could I just be unlucky and have another faulty sensor, or is there any other parts in the process that could be the issue?

Re: Egine Bay Temperature Warning Light
Can I use this sensor for the engine bay temp?
To me it looks exactly the same as the original part other than the colour?

Re: Egine Bay Temperature Warning Light
No, it is a different colour because it has a different resistance scale.

Thought as much.
Anyone know what else might be causing this issue other than a faulty sensor?

I’ve been told there is relay box in the fuse box for the temp sensor, can any confirm?

Re: Egine Bay Temperature Warning Light
I was advised to scratch the terminals and put on some Vaseline...and that seems to have done the trick!
