Brake caliper Refurb

Post by beefio » Tue Mar 12, 2019 10:31 pm

I’m refurbing a set of callipers and have derusted and painted them.

Just wondering if you can/should paint the rim/groove in the piston chamber as I noticed that this area had rusted previously, probably causing them to stick and paining it could prevent that happening again, but obviously I don’t want to effect it functioning?

Cheers

They'll have been zinc-treated originally - but so long as you're careful with the paint (and use paint with the appropriate temperature specification), I don't think that there will be a problem. But there again, I am not a brake expert!

The caliper components have come up really nicely by the way! :thumbsu:

Another possibility is to use red rubber grease when assembling the piston/seals/protective gaiter - ease assembly, lube the seals and metal bits, and provide some corrosion resistance - just a thought.

PS can you do me a favour? Would you mind weighing the caliper complete? I am just trying to work out whether the AP racing front calipers are worth fitting to Project Shed on the basis of weight saving... :)

Yes I’ve got some red rubber grease which I will be using to lube them up.

On reflection I do t think I need to paint them, the originals were probably 10-20 years old before the seal went and they started rusting. Even if I strip them down and and clean them up every few years or so that will probably be enough to prevent the rust. I think painting the inside is therefore unnecessary...

No preblem Rob, will weight them and let you know...but I imagine the AP calipers are much heavier as I have a set in the loft and they feel it...

Rob, I bet the APs weigh more due to their size...although I could be wrong.

CP7100 calipers weigh the best part of 2kg without pads - so they're certainly not feather weight, I agree!

How much do you weigh Rob?

Thinking of trimming anything off that... :thumbsu:

How many toes do you really need? :thumbsu:

Talking of painting brake parts, doesn't brake fluid take paint off?

It does bodywork pain, but probably not caliper paint as it is harder wearing...also you shouldn’t really be getting brake fluid in the pained parts...

Looks really good in subtle silver, not a great fan of raucous red personally.

Yes I wanted to keep them looking original...I’m pleased with the results and actually enjoyed doing it...just need to do the rears now...

Interesting - I could potentially save approx. 2kg by changing the calipers... Thanks for posting! :thumbsu:

PS I'm a fan of the colour you've chosen too. I painted mine black when I did them a few years back :)
