Fuel Cap Lubrication

Post by Androlyn » Sun Feb 02, 2020 9:45 am

The key goes into and turns and opens the fuel cap fairly OK but it feels like it's getting stiffer to turn and some lubrication is needed somewhere. What is recommended here please as I didn't want to drop some 3in1 oil onto the workings and it drip into the fuel tank. Or would a minimal amount not cause an issue.
Sorry for a daft question, just don't want my key to snap :thumbsu:

I give the lock an annual service by taking a spare key , dip it in light oil and activate the lock with it.
Using a spare key kept in a small poly bag prevents oil on your hands, pockets and everywhere else.
No oil will get in the fuel which would not be a problem i any case.

The best thing to use in locks with pins ie car locks, Yale type locks, etc is graphite powder, dust the key with it & put the key into the lock, do it a couple of times.

I learnt that from a locksmith during my joinery career :D

In 2012 driving through the south of France we stopped in Nice to fuel up. I couldn't get the key to go in to the lock.

Thinking outside the box I used the only lube I had available, some sun tanning oil my wife had.

It worked a treat and 8 years on is still working.

However given the choice graphite lube is the best thing for the job.

A third recommendation for graphite powder. I had the same issue with my boot lock recently. I was advised by a locksmith never to use oil or WD40 to lubricate a lock, house or car.

Thanks for the tips and feedback, not heard of graphite powder before.
I will try the key in the lock lubrication, but it feels as though it's the mechanism on the underside (fuel side) of the lock.
