75th Anniversary- advice

Post by 75thAnni » Sun Jan 10, 2021 7:15 pm

Hi

I am looking for advice, if I may. Sorry if I have put this in the wrong place.

Having recently got our 75th anniversary out of storage and turned attention to it. I am debating whether it is worth investing in some cosmetic repairs. Whilst in dry storage it has developed rust spots on around the windscreen and also some scratches. I am sure the latter will be solved by a machine polish.

I haven’t followed values properly for many years, so therefore not sure if MGFs values will go up justifiably if work is carried out.

Thank you any help you may be able to provide.

Hello and welcome. A good clean, well presented car will always attract a higher price. With 75th Anniversary's being fairly rare if it was my car I would be getting the rust spots dealt with before they spread.

Thank you Nigel. What would a nice clean 75th be worth. 65k miles.

There is one currently for sale on Shpock at £1450, it's black with a red hood.

I agree - the 75th came in two unique colours with nice interiors. They also had numbered plaques which make them unusual in the world of MGF/ MGTF special editions.

This car will always be worth a premium over a completely standard MGF (although how much of a premium will always be something of a guess)

The quote for the bodywork repairs is £600. Not sure I am putting £600 worth of value into it?

Depends what the car is worth to you. If you really like it and you are going to use it, then repair it and have fun. If it doesn't mean that much to you, then sell it to someone who will appreciate it. IMHO concerning classic cars and MGs, it's less about 'worth' and more about lifestyle.

Thank you

I will be selling it as we simply do but use. Having had it since 2003, it is a shame to see it unused. Like I say it was dry stored for a while. Probably done 50 miles in the last year.

In that case, as it's a limited edition, I would do the repairs, clean it all up and put it up for sale alongside other 75th Anniversaries at a similar price :thumbsu:

Hi Jonny, I will be selling it. Just depends if I get the rust buds looked at myself. No idea on value though.

Restoring it would be something i would be quite interested in doing myself. I've done quite a few cars and bikes so it's something i enjoy. Like yourself though, i have no idea what the value would be

Restoration is rarely financially profitable, but is usually emotionally rewarding. Especially if you end up with a car that is practically as new. In my view, the restoration needs to be compared to the price of buying yourself a new car - and in that context, it makes more sense. Ish.

Couldn't agree more Rob. Restoring one to make money would be daft, especially as values of these cars are so low. You have to do it with keeping it long term in mind otherwise you might as well buy one that's already sorted. With bikes i build or restore for others they know the chances of getting their money back if they choose to sell it on is pretty much zero but for them it's something they will keep and enjoy
