Am I Mad

Post by P49273 » Sat Jan 16, 2021 9:01 am

Hi all,

Looking to getting back into the MG world as my last TF went just after Rover had their small issue. I’ve seen a high mileage (133,000) early MGF VVC near me for £300, which hasn’t been used for a few years. Apparently bodywork is good, not sure about underneath, interior also good.

Been told that the clutch pedal won’t budge and this is probably the Master Cylinder needing replacing.

So the question is, is it worth saving or should I walk away? It’s a 3rd car so won’t get used much and I’m up for a mechanical challenge in these lock down times.

Thanks all

Sounds good with the added bonus of being a VVC! These cars are definitely worth saving but check subfames and for any rust in the cills and arches.

The clutch may be a simple fix but the arm could be seized which could take some work to free up or may need a new one.

The cambelts will probably also need doing and it may need a suspension pump up.

I was gifted a late F VVC a few years back as a non runner, turned out to be a quick fix but also spent a lot of time sorting out other issues, which were relatively straightforward with a basic tool kit. Parts are also easy to get and plenty of great advice on this forum.

If you set aside a a budget to take care of any unforeseen problems it should be great fun if the car is basically sound!

Just waiting to hear back from the garage who has the car, hopefully it won’t have been sold over the weekend....

Definitely sounds like the clutch cross shaft has seized, a common problem. You would hope that if you could get some WD40 down it it could be freed off. I have never had to do it so I don't know if this is possible. What's other peoples experience ?

You might do better with Plus Gas as a releasing agent, I've always found it works better than WD40.

If you run the engine for a long time, it will heat the casings. Aluminium will expand more than the steel allowing the shaft to move.

I reckon early, un-buggered about MGFs will begin to increase in value, but there are various issues that will need to be addressed, such as sphere regassing, corrosion to subframes, wishbones, etc as well as the usual suspects, hoses, brake pipes, underfloor coolant pipes, radiator etc. A good possible "keeper" if it's in good nick but it could turn out to be a money pit. There are a lot about still, so don't buy unless you're sure.

As an FYI concerning early Fs value, an October build date 1995 F sold in the USA just recently for $8100 US, ~£5900.

Sadly the garage had sold it before I could say yes I’ll have it. I reckon it will now be put into many bits as the value is in the parts I guess.

Well the search continues, been too long since I’ve had an F/TF....
