My new 'freestyle' project

Post by jonny69 » Wed Mar 10, 2021 7:34 pm

Today the new project arrived :D

A 2001 mgf 'freestyle' in Anthracite. It has the 1.8 none vvc engine. 84,000 miles and in pretty good condition really.

It needs a few jobs though. So far the work i can see is..

interior mirror needs sticking back on.
rear discs and pads.
the hood is pretty battered and the rear window in shot so may just replace the lot with a better one.
missing the plastics under the front bonnet.
no jack etc.
drivers door card isn't there. Not sure why though.
it has a decat pipe so that needs sorting.
It has an mg cd player in it but it doesn't seem to work so need to look into that. I would like to keep it if possible.
needs a full service and i don't know when the cam belt was last changed so need to do that.
water is coming into the door, there seems to be a large gap between the window and the sealing strip on the outside.
MG badges front and rear are faded, not important i suppose but will bug me.
Has no MOT so will need that doing.

So far that's what i've found. Seems pretty solid underneath from what i can see but need to get it up in the air for a good inspection. It drives ok and has all it's gears so that's good, no sign of head gasket problems either. Looking forward to getting stuck in but will be a couple of weeks, have a customers bike to finish building first (damn work getting in the way ;) )

Here's a few photos..

Cheers. I reckon it should be a good little project to keep me out of trouble.

The seats look pretty good, usually an indication the car has been looked after. There seems to be some wear on the steering wheel. I've found that "Scuffcote", which we used on our son's school shoes, works really well and is long lasting.

Seats are pretty good. I'll try that on the steering wheel, like you say there is a bit of wear on it. Thanks for the tip :thumbsu:

i guess there is no door card because someone was trying to sort out the leaks.

There is a large gap between the side windows and the sealing rubbers. Is something missing.? Tried to take some photo's of it.

Thanks for the offer James. I managed to pick them up close by. Haven't had a real good look at the jack yet but i'm sure it will be ok.

Good day today, my new stainless underfloor pipes arrived. Something else to add to the to do list.

Also picked this up, hopefully there will be a few good hints and tips.

Great project Jonny - but expect the wiper to be full of water and be corroded and/or noisy! (Don't ask how I know) The scuttle trim provides a rain shield to the motor, and if it removed, it is directly exposed to the elements.

Otherwise, this one does look like it will respond to a jolly good clean and sort out! :D :thumbsu:

Cheers Rob. There seem to be a few odd bits missing. The part you noticed above the wiper, the plastic inner wheel arches and I had to get a drivers door card and trim. I think maybe someone was taking bits off for another. On the plus side its pretty solid, especially underneath and the subframes. The bodywork is ok, a small deep scratch on the drivers door and a small ding above the nearside rear light, should polish up nice though. The exhaust seems to be a mix of earlier mgf and random welded on pipes. I think I'll be saving for a nice stainless one. Looking forward to getting stuck into him in the next couple of weeks.

Been busy moving my workshop and have a customers bike to finish and then at last I will have some time to spend on it. I do start it up and sit in it though :D it's giving me chance to collect the bits I need though so I can do it all in one go

I’ve got an original MGF owners manual that you can have if yours is missing.

At last i managed to get some time to spend on him. Cleaned the front subframe of it's flakey rust, looks nice and solid. Put on rust killer and then painted with smoothrite. Looks a lot better and should keep any rust at bay for a good while

Also managed to clean up the slam panel a bit and replace some nasty rusty bolts with stainless ones. It took a while, some bolts needed a good bit of gentle working to get out but even so one still snapped, bugger. I may do that today. Cleaner looking though i think
