Wanted:Emission guru/ Merseyside area,??

Post by c13amb » Tue Oct 19, 2021 8:28 pm

Hi all looking for an emission guru on these cars in the Merseyside area.. does anyone know where I can find one?
Cars been through an mot and failed on emissions. Have replaced cat, both lambda sensors and the garage who have the car have still not got it down sufficiently to pass even though the results have improved greatly apparently!!
I do have a TTmk7 and I know these have caused issues in the past for others but I don't want to replace it unless absolutely necessary as I've spent enough on it and other mot fails as it is!
My set up is a 421 manifold from Satur, with std cat Apollo enclosed air filter and the TTmk7,and a remap by kmaps about 5 years ago!!
Any help would be appreciated as the current mot expires on the 26th so it needs sorting asap.
Cheers all.
Carl.

Can you post up the emissions results as this will help with diagnosing the issue?

I don't have them currently as the car remains with the garage doing the MOT. I'll be asking tomorrow though!!
All I have at the moment is what it days on the fail notice..it reads
Exhaust carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle exceeds manufacturer's specified limits.(8.2.1.2(a))
Exhaust lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (8.2.1.2(c))

Both lambda sensors have been replaced and new cat so any ideas anyone?
The fail figures hope they help someone??

CO is the cat's responsibility, it could also affect the lambda. Was it an OEM cat or an ebay bargain? The K series can pass MOT emissions without a cat at all - although not having a cat is of course 'illegal'. If it was a recent, or old item, can you try another?

It wasn't an ebay bargain...supplied as a replacement by the garage doing the repairs along with the sensors!! So I would hope they are good items!
And to add these are the original figures..since the cat and sensors have been replaced the figures have improved but not enough :thumbsd:
I'm thinking it may be down to the TTmk7 back box.. anybody think this may be possible as I've spent enough already!!

Emissions issues do seem to follow the TT exhaust around. From what I have read in the past, try stuffing the passenger (left hand) side pipe with a rag. The MoT tester may or may not allow the car to pass in this state but at least you will be able to see the effect on the readings.

Has the TT been inspected for cracked pipework, it is known problem that allows air to be drawn in?

Also has the MAP sensor and the ECU coolant temperature been checked for the correct output values?

That's an interesting set of results. The first fast idle is fine (no recorded rpm, no recorded temperature) whereas the second fast idle check, the engine is clearly running rich (over-fuelled). Again, no idle speed or temperature documented. On natural idle, everything has settled back down to a pass.

I think the lambda sensor is fine.

Either the engine is being transiently over-fuelled, or there is a partial obstruction in the air intake leading to a relative over-fuelling.

Of the two above, I agree with Chris' idea that the ECU coolant sensor is on its way out, leading to cold-engine enrichment when it is no longer needed.

Otherwise, yes, vacuum leak to inlet manifold is up there (check all vacuum lines, inlet manifold gaskets, IACV sealing etc) or an ignition fault od some description (potentially caused by a coil pack fault?)

Hope you can update us when you've cracked this frustrating problem Carl!

Thanks Rob..it's a head scratcher but it'll have to go to a specialist rather than "a garage" for a more indepth diagnosis I think, although the garage has been excellent his model expertise isn't quite there!!

Have you checked your plugs lately?

I agree with Chris/Rob, ecu coolant sensor could very so be the problem, it could also be the MAF, vacuum lines, maybe a leak in the intake manifold..

You need a specialist on this.
Cheers!

Plugs were changed 1200miles ago with the recommended type. I agree it needs a specialist its either one of the mobile experts or find a local mg rover expert in the NW.
