Re: spot the error
I know. Even changing the battery is a PITA. I had to buy a tool for my father's countryman just to code the new battery in, let alone the under bonnet disassembly required just to get the old battery out...
I maintain that 1990s/2000s MG Rovers are at the pinnacle of home-maintainable enthusiast cars - relatively simple to work on and just the right of electronic control to keep everything under control and reliable. And with affordable enthusiast-level diagnostic tools now available, we now have the best of both worlds.

Re: spot the error
I'm not sure either of my kids or their spouses have any idea what goes on under the bonnets of their cars or for that matter how to actually open them.
Times change. I remember being shown round my new E Class Merc in 2001 by the salesman and asking him to open the bonnet because I wanted to have a look. His stunned reply was "Why? That's our job. If there's anything wrong the car will tell you, and we'll sort it" - actually, very true. I've now had the same car for over 20 years and can count on the fingers of both hands the number of times I've opened the bonnet apart from doing my own servicing. The reality is that there's not much to see or do. The car is SO reliable it's bonkers. 276,000 on the clock and it still does over 50mpg.
However, it is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security as my son discovered when the Daewoo Matiz I gave him seized up solid because he'd never checked the oil for 6 years and wondered what the red light was for... Eventually a lack of proper servicing comes back to bite you on the arse.
