Soft top rear clips

Post by Ade » Thu Feb 09, 2023 10:43 pm

Hi, I am new to this, not on social media or anything like that, so I hope I’ve got this right. I have purchased an mgf vvc 1.8 and on general looking around the car noticed that the rear soft top clips are all loose to the bodywork when undone, when the roof is up and fastened it doesn’t leak or rattle, just seems odd that they are all loose in the same way or should they be tight to the body and do I need to fit new rivets? Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard, Ade. It sounds to be fine from your description. The soft top overhangs a gutter at the back so provided the gasket strip is present you should stay watertight under 'normal' weather conditions. The rivets should only need replacement when the hood fabric is changed.

The clips should be tight when closed down (presume you are referring to the 5 clips on the parcel shelf).

Hi and thanks, yes when closed all the clips are tight, I was just concerned that when you undo them they are all loose on their rivet fastening and I thought that they maybe should be tight on the rivet around the car frame

Ah, they should be tightly fixed to the rear.

If you haven't already discovered, the reason for the 5 clips is so that you can access the engine access hatch which is under the rear shelf. You should first unlatch the roof at the header rail, then undo the 5 clips and swing the soft-top forwards so you can remove the parcel shelf trim and then the sound deadening insulation.
