Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

keyfob or immobiliser issues

Post by hughlin » Mon Nov 03, 2014 6:43 pm

I noticed that i was having to get nearer and nearer to the car to get the keyfob to work, so changed the battery as per instruction - battery out, hold buttons for 5 sec, new battery in, unlock manually, lock by fob several times. OK - done that. BUT what then seemed to happen was odd. From time to time I found that I had to click on the lock button, even if the car was already locked *before* the unlock would work. This applied both to actually unlocking and to simply un-immobilising .

tried another battery in the fob - no difference. I then notice that my MoT had run out - woops - so left the car in the drive for a few days to get that issue sorted - went to start it and it turned and turned, but wouldnt start. Checking around, the fuel wasn't getting through - checked the cutoff which was OK, so it started to look like an immobiliser issue.

An expert friend mentioned that sometimes disconnecting the battery and leaving it so for a bit might sort things - and since it needed charging anyway did that for a couple of days. Tried again today and it started fine (after a lot of spluttering to get fuel back to the injectors!). And the key fob issue doesn't seem to be there any more.

Is this something that can occur when changing fob batteries - that the immobiliser gets confused? Or should i be looking to some other cause (OK - a change of plugs and a blast of magic injector cleaner will probably help too!). Because while this all happened at home where I have another vehicle - it would be a damn nuisance if I find i can't start it when i'm out and about!

The immobiliser can be funny.

Which version have you got?
Square or Oval?

Also which mk1F/mk2F/TF/LE500 have you got?
Home to black Alfa 159 3.2 V6 Q4, blue MGZR160, green MGF VVC and grey MGF 1.8i, and red MG Maestro T16.

Durr - posted the original message late at night - its an MGF Mk1 (N reg). As to the type of immobiliser, I don't know - I'll need to find out where to look and what to look at!

Two points.
If the engine cranks. then it is not immobilised.
f you have the EKA (Emergency Key Access) Code, then you can turn the immobiliser OFF until you press the ON button.
See you Handbook.

It certainly cranked - but equally certainly there was a spark but no fuel getting through. Furthermore, there was the very odd behaviour of the key-fob/immobiliser/locking system.

i know about the access code use of course - but that isn't the issue (since disconnecting the battery has resolved the immediate problem) - what i need to know is what WAS happening - so as to - hopefully - avoid it happening again!
