Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.
Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.
Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway!
Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Exhaust note adjustment
Hi folks,
Just bought myself a little MGF, looking forward to being part of the crew.
The exhaust on mine is a new system but it stupidly loud!! Unbearable.
I'm told that there is a control in the engine bay somewhere that can silence the noise a bit, anyone familiar with such systems?
Alternatively, any other ways I can save my hearing?

Re: Exhaust note adjustment
Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately whoever gave you that info was a little misinformed.
On some MG TF's (typically 2002-2004) there was a small vacuum operated valve in one tailpipe that lowered the exhaust volume by a very small amount at low revs.
The valve isn't found on earlier cars such as your F, so I'm afraid the only real option you have it to change the silencer for a quieter model.

Re: Exhaust note adjustment
Swap it for my old standard box if you want
Re: Exhaust note adjustment
Thanks chaps.
I would, with pleasure! The system is almost new, you would be welcome to it - be advised though it is seriously loud!
Is yours in good useable condition?

Still on the car at the moment and went through the mot this summer.
I haven't been under the car since but will try to get some photos if you like.

Yes please - i'll try and get you a Db reading for mine. Apparantly it cost £400 so must be decent, i just cant bare the noise - i'm wearing ear plugs for driving at the moment!
Re: Exhaust note adjustment
There are those who would pay with their right arm for a really loud exhaust. Find what you have fitted, sell it and fit a new original.

Re: Exhaust note adjustment
My thoughts exactly, as much as I would love to have a loud exhaust I don't want to see another MG owner out of pocket.

Re: Exhaust note adjustment
I picked up a new Bosal rear box for my 97 MGF for £70 delivered a few months ago from:-
www.ClickCarParts.co.uk.
It's a louder that the original box but not LOUD.................... loud. Sounds a bit more like the old MGB's did when one is driving it. I have seen the same Bosal boxes listed at £100 more...................... just goes to show the mark up some work too!

Im not sure what type it is, here is a pic, i can vaguely see the word POWER on the left tip, but no real other indicators.
How can i tell if theres a cat fitted?

Re: Exhaust note adjustment
Hi and welcome to the forum Ant
That script looks like the one used for "X-POWER", the MG tuning brand although I thought supplies of the MGF pipes had dried up.
If I were you I'd buy a cheap replacement and sell this one, possibly on ebay where the market will decide it's value.
If you look under the car between the silencer and the engine there should be another smaller "silencer" which is actually the cat, if there isn't one it will be adding greatly to the volume of the exhaust sound.
When getting a replacement make sure you get one for your model - i.e. mk1 F or mk2 F/MGTF.

Thank you!
I'll have a good look underneath - if theres no cat, what is the gap filled with? Or is it just easy to omit.
