Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

How to remove k seal

Post by Andy1 » Thu Jul 27, 2017 7:57 pm

Just had a load of work done on the f, had just planed to have the head gasket and belts replaced but when the head came off it was found that the liners needed shims and the head needed to be replaced in the course of this it was obvious that someone had used k seal at some point. My question is what is the best way to flush the whole cooling system to get rid of the k seal, don't want it left in the system to cause problems down the line
Thank
Andy

Hi Andy1 I'm not an expert but I found evidence of coppery HG sealant when I 'did' my broken inlet manifold gasket last year on my '05 TF 115. The coolant had always appeared pinky/yellow in the exp tank and the tank was brown: This was after a prof cambelt, tensioner water pump + coolant flush a few months earlier!

I put in Comma rad flush, let it idle to warm then drained + replaced with water, warmed up til the temp gauge registered, bled, drained, replaced with water, warmed up, bled. drained, replaced etc - probably about 8x - 'til the drained water became clear of the coppery surface sheen and yellowy copper deposit.

It seemed to take most of the day. I warmed it enough to drain the water trapped behind the closed t/stat each time. I then took the exp tank off and cleaned out the sticky yellow 'rust'. Lots of detergent, screwdriver + rag and balsamic rice cocktail shake...

Next day I ordered a new radiator cos Rimmers had a sale (their catalogue had just come out), fitted it a couple of days later, replaced with pink coolant, noticed the both the heater and rad bleed points were now gushing when they previously trickled, then finally bled it. A test run showed a more reasonable 'normal' temp (92 - 96C I think) and thankfully no more burning coolant smell. Even now I think I ought to clean/replace the PRT.

She's running fine now: Clean pink coolant, clean white exp tank and no discernible coppery traces but I often monitor her temp with an OBDII. I detest the moron who inflicted that stuff on me and ArntyR!

In short use rad flush and loads of warm water flushes. The rad is hard to clean so is the im gasket jiggle valve; I was tempted to back flush the rad but replacement seemed a 'no brainer' after taking it off, and good v-f-m from Rimmers.

(I've heard that a dishwasher tablet or two might achieve similar results but I didn't feel confident enough to brave it!)

I ran my 2005 MGTF with Dishwasher Tablets for around 100 miles to clean out the system prior to having a new head gasket etc fitted as there was no history of a new head gasket being fitted result nice & clean!! :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Cheers

Right, Mikeadman...next time I do a coolant flush I'll do your dishwasher tablet clean first then follow it up with loadsa warm flushes. That oughta work!

How many tablets? And was there a special brand that worked for you? Do they need time to dissolve first?

I can also appreciate that the cooling and warming cycles within that 100miles would help the scouring process and, in my case, would serve to address my PRT 'niggle' and doubts at the same time. Brill!

Thanks all for the info, I think it's the dishwasher tablet trick to start with then see how I get on with a flush or 3. I just want to make sure the system is clear after spending nearly as much as the car cost last year.

1 or 2 tablets, it works a treat :thumbsu: they just need to dissolve, as Mike said run it for around 70 - 100 miles & reflush. K seal is evil stuff, a nightmare to remove.
