Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Soft Top Hoods MGF & TF

Post by Dallas » Mon Jul 02, 2018 4:38 pm

Hi there, I have another question... you will get fed up of me before long... ;)

Will a soft top hood from a 2004 TF fit a 1996 F ?

Thanks ;)

Hi Dallas,
Yes the hood should fit, a simple like for like swap.
Gary.

Thanks Gary. ;)

I've just picked one up from my local scrappy, it was from a 2004 TF.

The hood that is currently on the car has a broken zip, so I may just swap the whole hood and frame over for the new one, then see if I can fix the zip at my leisure.

I do already have a good spare hood, but it does have a couple of patches, the hood I got today is in pristine condition, so I may just get rid of the other spare.

There is one thing I have noticed between these three soft top hoods, and that is the difference in rear window quality, plus frame arms.

Two of the hoods have a thick quality rear vinyl window, and the roof I got today which is from a 2004 TF has a very thin quality rear vinyl window.

So... which is better? Does the thin vinyl window rip more easily, or the thicker version? The thick version also has a green tint to it, where the other two are clear/white.

Also... the original 1996 hood seems to have different frame arms, the two newer hoods have what seems to be better designed side arms that look bang-head-friendly... :thumbsu:

Simple answer is NO!

The early hoods and frames prior to mid 1997 are different to later cars.
The hoods are not interchangeable.
However the later frame will fit an early car and vice versa.

Also at some point the zip was changed and again the two are not interchangeable.

If you have the tools (drill and rivet gun) it is easier to change the window than the whole hood.

Hi, I just want to changed over the whole soft top including the frame, unbolt the original current F roof and bolt on the new 2004 TF roof.

Will the 2004 TF roof fit straight onto the 1996 F, are the fittings and frame shape all the same?

Yes, the 2004 hood and frame will bolt to the 1996 body.
