Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

How to fix it?

I'm experiencing some difficulty starting my MGF TF VVC 1.8 from the year 2000, especially first thing in the morning. Despite having a full service conducted just 8 weeks ago, the car struggles to start, often coughing, spluttering, and even cutting out. Typically, it takes a second or usually a third try, with a bit of revving, before it finally starts. I've noticed that until the engine warms up, the car feels somewhat unreliable, particularly when approaching a stop like at a junction. However, after warming up, it runs smoothly for the rest of the day. Does anyone have any insights or suggestions on what might be causing this and how to fix it?

It sounds like the ECU doesn't 'know' that the engine is cold. I'd start by changing the ECU temperature sender. On my '96 car this is the brown one, the blue one drives the temperature gauge but others will need to confirm if this is the case for a 2000 car.. Both sensors are only 10-15 pounds.

With the engine cover removed this is a very easy job though it might be worth soaking them in penetrating oil beforehand, you may possibly be able to do this with the grille in the boot removed.

It does sound very much like the ECU coolant temperature sensor.

That make sense to me, too, (not that my opinion should count for much!)
