Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

help with alarm please

Post by deezil » Sun May 13, 2012 9:23 am

hi all
my alarm keeps going off for no reason when locking with the fob
its fine just using the key to lock
which indicates possibly wolumeric interior sensor?
checked all interior lights go off in boot bonnet etc... there fine.
ive seen a post for alarm test but i dont really see the point in checking it?
is there anywhere or any one who can readjust the sensitivity of this sensor?
surely i cant be stuck with using the key everyday

many thanks...

Are your fuses OK....
Yes, you're right, locking with the key in the door instead of the fob doesn't activate the volumetric sensor.
I'm guessing though that this could be something the do with the contact switches that detect unauthorized entry to the bonnet, boot or doors.
Maybe a bit of damp has gotten in somewhere.

Not wishing to repeat myself via another (related) thread......

fuses which could be related to the problem are:
Fuse 23 which is a 15amp and is for the anti-theft alarm (also engine management and fuel pump) situated under the steering wheel fifth row down (the right hand sided one)
Possibly the prime suspect here could be Fuse F5 which is a 15amp and is for anti-theft alarm and also central door locking situated in the under bonnet fuse box (the fifth one down as you look at the stack top to bottom on the left hand side).

Hope that helps Deezil !

If suspicion remains that the volumetric sensor is causing the alarm activations, you could try disconnecting it - it's behind the vertical section of the armrest/storage compartment.

Locking with the key means that the alarm is not activated. Locking with the fob does.

If the alarm goes off without fail then there is another area for you to look at: the old chestnut, the boot loom wiring. Because these wires are flexed/ extended when the boot is opened and closed, the insulation is prone to fracture and shorts develop. This may mean the boot light is always illuminated - or comes on intermittently, causing the alarm to fire - or similarly the alarm may detect a ghost unauthorised opening of the boot lid.

Check the other suggested areas first - but then peel back the wrapping on the boot lid cable - I suspect you'll find your answer lurking in there.

Oh, and welcome to the forum! :thumbsu:

thanks all, sorted now.
disconnected interior sensor with roof up as it was raining
and no more random alarm going off
alarm still works with door contacts so im not too bothered about the movement sensor just now..
cheers

Sounds as though the volumetric sensor is too sensitive. This can be reset on Testbook - the MG Rover diagnostics computer :)

Glad to hear that you've managed to preserve your sanity by disabling the volumetric sensor for the time being though Deezil :)
