Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

MGF window regulator

Post by GJO » Thu Nov 29, 2012 11:22 am

The offside (driver's side) window regulator on our MGF is particularly sluggish and sometimes needs a helping hand. We have records that show that it was replaced several years ago after it stopped working altogether - an initial investigation indicates that the replacement is not an original MGR part but an aftermarket substitute. I am strongly tempted to source an original in good condition from a breaker but as the driver's door window gets the most use, I am wondering if there is an alternative motor available from a less used window on another model - i.e. one of the back doors of a saloon?

Another alternative is to source a window regulator from a left hand drive car exported to mainland Europe. A few years ago I bought a window regulator (non-electric) for my old MGB through the American eBay site and, for the additional cost of shipping from the USA, I obtained a virtually unused mechanism.

You've probably read the forum entries that pop up on google related to regulator replacement on TF - and yes, people report using the mechanism from a Rover 400/ 45 rear door works nicely. I haven't tried that, but it appears to work.

Broadly, the motor/ mechanism on the MGF are reliable and robust: they don't fail that often. If one mechanism has failed, and another appears to be giving up the ghost, one has to wonder what it is about the window lift on that door that is causing so much grief. Is the alignment correct and the glass free to move, or is it binding?

Well we are investing a lot of time (and money) to make this car as reliable as originally intended but I have to admit to being surprised when my local MGR specialist quoted £264 for parts to replace and adjust the window regulator and that price did not include labour.

Having read various topics on this and other forums, I figured that it was a straightforward, albeit fiddly, task that I could do myself and there are good used regulators complete with motors being sold on eBay for £20 or thereabouts. If they are usually reliable, there must be a fair chance that a used unit, properly installed and adjusted, will last a good few years. And it can't be any harder than installing an MGB window regulator - can it?

I replaced the window regulator and motor on Cath,s MGF about 6 months ago with a unit from a TF without to many problems and im not that handy with a socket set  , if i remember correctly i had to swap the connector for the motor over, but i may well be imagining this (it happens when you get to my age :( ) Only paid a tenner for the parts from a scrapyard.

Lubricated the channels?
Silicone lube works wonders.
