Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Have you tried the cam position sensor as if its getting spark but not even firing on easy start then it has to be a timing issue so the sensor would be my first port of call

If it's been wet just try WD40 in all the relevant sensors. Water in them (from floods maybe?) screws the readings. The ECT sensor - next to the top hose - effectively controls the "choke" - water in there says "engine hot" and no "choke" is applied - crank it for ever.

even reverted to leaving leads plugs and ecu system in the house wrapped in a towel near the radiators. the immobilser n alarm light isnt on wen i unlock the car so i rule that out. cleaned the crank sensor. could it be the injectors or timing then. also i did have a coolant leak b4 xmas causing overheating but its a new head n was just an airlock i sorted

Fault code readers being sufficiently cheap these days, and the potential time saving in being able to see what the ECU is getting from sensors etc can be huge, perhaps it's time you added one to your toolkit - MEMS3 (the version of ECU in your MY2000 car) monitors and fault logs most of the possible issues the engine can suffer, sometimes needs a bit of lateral thinking as to what an underlying cause could be but on the whole they're money well spent. Especially when you've already ruled out most of the likely culprits...

I brought this obd2 reader off eBay for my X reg 2000 MGF. Works perfectly and has saved me loads of money diagnosing a fault with mine.

Mark my X reg is a 2000 model and is obd2. As long it is Obd2 compatible it doesn't matter that it says 2001 onwards. On MGF's its from a certain VIN in 2000. Have you checked to see if yours is obd2? The 2001 date is when it was made compulsory for all petrol cars to be obd2 compatible.

VIN n° is on the dashboard next to windscreen, under bonnet on o/s inner wing near horns and in your Registration Document.
