Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. Two questions - hood whistle and throttle jerkiness

Post by Swampy » Wed Apr 23, 2014 2:29 pm

I have two questions, firstly, my hood has developed a whistle across the windscreen header rail at 100+. Whilst it takes minor downward clamping force from a hand to stop the noise, I occasionally need two hands (especially at 100++). I see the hood clamps has some type of adjustment, but I haven't been able to find out how they work and in what direction they clamp. The workshop manual doesn't seem to have any explanation and I don't want to risk making the problem worse by playing around with the clamps.

The second problem relates to the accelerator pedal. When pressing the throttle from completely closed, there seems to be a hesitation/sticking prior to getting a normal fluid motion from the pedal, making some departures very ham-fisted, especially in car parks. The problem doesn't seem to be at the throttle body end and the pedal itself seems to sit in two white coloured 'plasticky' bushes (possibly nylon). Being the usual MGF pedal location, it is exceptionally hard to trouble-shoot at that end, and I haven't located any replacement bushes advertised. Is this a problem which occurs, or should I be looking somewhere else?

Thanks.

Further investigation, may lead to electrical and perhaps mems issue. fuel air/ratios's spark etc..

Do you have the standard airflow intake system or some suped up cold air feed? or even an ecu bender?

Intake trail is almost bog standard, apart from a 52mm throttle body. The feel is similar to having a flat spot in the pedal (if I could describe it like that).

Thanks for the hood clip advice Gary.

Hi Swampy

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a kink in the throttle cable near the pedal box. I think when the head was off at some point tome one had pulled the throttle cable hard and introduced a kink. new throttle cable solved it for me.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks mate, I'll give that a squiz, but I'm convinced the MGF pedals were installed by circus freaks with four elbows and multiple wrists!

Much easier with the whole car in pieces: the pedal box is probably one of the first things put into the car on the production line!

Just back from a 3 day road trip. Unfortunately due to drizzly weather the roof had to go up for a change and I can confirm the hood no longer whistles :). The throttle will be dealt with eventually.

I had the same thing when I fitted a 52mm throttle body. It was caused by the throttle butterfly jamming closed in the body. I cured it by adjusting the butterfly stop, its a screw mounted on the body with a rubber cover over it. I opened it a fraction and the jerkiness disappeared.

Thanks Billd, I may have a similar problem as it started after the 52mm throttle body went on. I did adjust the butterfly before installation to close to almost 1-2mm, perhaps it expands slightly. I'll give the screw a minor adjustment then.
