Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

One shot windows both sides...

Post by crussell » Mon May 05, 2014 8:19 pm

Is it just a case of grabbing a replacement driver side motor and swapping it with the passenger one? Or is there a relay somewhere else that needs replacing?

Loads of ideas running through my mind at the minute hence lot of posts/questions!

It's controlled by the BCU.

You can buy after market one shot controllers.

Not the motor, no - nor the BCU for pre-Pektron cars. The single-shot driver's door function is controlled by a stand alone ECU mounted near the A-pillar on MY2000 MGFs and early, pre-2003 TFs (part number YMC 106170).

I've take one apart, and despite having nearly twice as many pins than is necessary to control one window, there are only electronics inside to control one window! So, to make both windows single-shot down, you need two window lift controllers :)

Wiring is relatively simple - here's how I did it: http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/on ... /index.htm

Yes, on Pektron cars you're spot on - it's a BCU function.

But you can use an earlier window lift ECU for the passenger door window as necessary :)

Ok, do I just tap into the wiring loom and locate it in the footwell?

You can mount it where ever you like really :) I've put mine under the heater unit behind the centre console, and tapped into the wires where they are the most accessible: behind the switches :)

I'm interested in doing this for my 2002 TF.
Currently there does not seem to be any one shot function at all, not even drivers side.
Was it an optional extra or is it more likely a fault somewhere?

Unless I'm not operating it correctly of course ;)

How is it activated normally?

Just a quick press should do it. So that it makes contact for a second, no more.

Not sure if it was optional...

As I have the controller from the donor VVC (MY2000 spec) I am considering adding this to "Elsie" of course am already using the under carpet insulation for it as it was in better condition.

Even the Pektron cars have the passenger window motor and switch directly hard wired to each other with no fancy electrics. So fitting the earlier pre Pektron one shot window ECU sounds like a good project! The only relay involved is the external one which is switched by the SCU to keep the windows live for 20 seconds after the ignition is switched off - provided the doors are not opened, another small refinement from MG - but how many have discovered this? ;)

Plenty of us with Mk1 MGFs! Carl perfected a modification, using the ECU switched live to the charcoal cannister to keep the electric windows working for a short time after ignition key removal (details on Dieter's website - http://www.mgfcar.de/) :)

I thought it was 12 seconds, I'm sure it is for the ZS.
I do wish it worked after the door was opened as I much prefer to close the window with the door open (don't ask me why, I don't know) and on the mk2 you have the mobile door locking which doesn't unlock the door until the ignition is off (or you press the switch on the dash.

I find that autolocking on the ZS to be a bit annoying too James - but presumably you can programme it out (if you had access to Testbook!)
