Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Thanks for that! I've laminated mine & tick off the jobs with a whiteboard marker as I do the Service. Car then gets a label maker sticker of the date & mileage.

That's a good idea to laminate it - I've been using them and they get covered in grubby oil stains! :lol:

I've been recording disc thickness as well - I wonder it is worth modifying the form to include this? I find that recording the information is a good way of ensuring that I do properly check things :)

Disc rotors that are worn beyond the service limit are usually obvious without the vernier calipers.

Mine were so clearly shot I didn't need to measure them. Same applies to my son's Astra at the moment.

and the difference between say 19.95 and 20.01 mm is so small it really shouldn't matter.
It's when they look like mine above that they need to go.

I just dragged up this old thread to get a copy of the service sheet, and upon reading I see where Rob suggested recording the disc thickness.
So I went off about disc rotor thickness.

Now that' I've read it again I assume Rob meant disc pad thickness; which of course is an important item to measure.

So perhaps lines 09 and 10 might include a space to record the pad thickness.

On all my cars ( sports and others ) I find it's possible to predict the mileage to the pad replacement quite accurately with
just 2 measurements; as long as you write them down.

And as Rob says, if you measure the pad thickness, however roughly, you know it's checked properly and not just a quick "she'll be right" look like many Aussie mechanics do.

I agree with both comments - check both the rotor and the pad thickness. And yes, really good idea to note these dimensions. I do this in the notes box, but perhaps better to have a documentation box where it is written?

Any other thoughts? I'd be happy to make a Mk3 version of these service record sheets :D

How often do you recommend changing the air filter element?

I found this on Mike Satur's site;

Approx. 105mm x 265mm replaces standard filter advice changing every 6000 - 10000 miles or service interval. TIP: For long term economy and improved airflow use replacement foam filter PP99.

So with the A or B service?
What do the rest of you do?

Checked mine yesterday and it's looking quite dirty. I'm only doing about 5000 miles a year
so oil and oil filter are changed every 12 months on age rather than distance.

I guess the answer to that is the reason for doing the A or B service - for mileage or for age. If age rather than distance travelled, then you can probably nurse the filter for longer. But I'd take it out and give it a good inspection. If dirty, change it. The standard filters are pretty cheap. If the service has come up for distance travelled, then replace with each service. :)

Of course, a lot will depend on the local road conditions - if the roads are dusty or graded tracks, then replace the filter more frequently.

RobboMc I change the oil twice a year and do a ‘full’ service in July-ish as its too hot/humid in summer to strip engine covers etc. off fo a intense overhaul I.e. it’s too horrid in the garage in summer. I find that easiest.
I did a 1800Km round trip last weekend to Rockhampton for a hillclimb in perfect winter weather. Perfect way to spend the Queensland winter.
