Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Web interface on a scan tool: Houston we have a problem

Post by pscan.eu » Sun Jul 27, 2014 8:30 pm

One of the things that I have been looking at with the MG Rover diagnostic tool is the possibility of building a web server into it.
This would allow me to market to customers with Android / Apple phones and tablets without needing to develop an actual Android or IOS app.
However it would appear that Bosch already patented this idea.

See http://www.google.com/patents/US8744668

Not happy

Any ideas anyone?

This seems to be a US only patent which possibly means that I am ok provided I don't sell in the US. Not sure though...

I thought you only broke patents if you overtly ripped off exactly the same design details. Surely your detail methods will be your own 'design'?

Having read through some of the patent it seems to be a group of software PHDs trying to make a few bob hoping their thesis could provide a bit of future income. Nothing novel in their technical solution either, just a collection of freely available protocols grouped together. If I were you I'd just get on with it and if anyone thinks you have broken their patent then let them prove it!
