Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Head Gasket problems.

Post by mudwitz » Wed Oct 15, 2014 7:15 pm

Would you advise having the head gasket done even if the car is running ok,prevention better than cure sort of situation ? or wait until the car breaks down at an inconvenient time ? How can you tell if the HG has been done visually ? and is it a possibility that you could be a lucky owner and the car may never need a HG.Thanks.

My two-penith, spend a fraction of the cost on a LowLarm (something like that, low level coolant alarm). Carry some water in the boot and you'll be able to carry on your journey. Blown head gaskets rarely kill engines, it's running out of coolant because of it.

If it`s not broken don`t fix it :thumbsu:

Having it "fixed" before it breaks guarantees nothing, you can't guarantee it will break in the first place. If you have the cash for the gasket replacement just save it somewhere just in case. Precaution is the best way, ok low level alarm is ok but if a pipe bursts you know soon enough that its happened anyway, its no substitute for checking levels before every start up. The areas of concern are all well documented, prevent coolant loss and mechanical sympathy wil cut head gasket failure chances dramatically.

Thankyou for your advice, I just thought it would be a question of time before a head gasket was required.
