Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Leaking brake pipe

Post by dansrockin » Fri Dec 12, 2014 3:49 pm

hi all, on bleeding my brakes today, i noticed fluid dripping from the rear drivers side pipe, next to the alternator. i cant get a good enough view to see exactly where its coming from as the pipe goes under the rear wing, but its definitly coming from the steel solid pipe, rather than the flexi pipe.
i had a quick look online but cant seem to find any details about whats involved in replacing this. is it a difficult job? i cant even see the pipe, so i dont know where it goes or how its connected to the car!!
i rang a couple of local mg rover mechanics, and have been quoted around £100-150 to replace depending on what they find once they get into it. does that sound reasonable, and should i just go with that, or is it easy enough to diy? i would prefer to do this as cheap as possible being so close to xmas!!
any how to's anywhere?
thanks

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID000304 should help you work out where the pipe goes. It might be quite easy to get out, it might be a bitch.

You local hose specialist should be able to make one up using your old nuts if you provide the old one, even if it is in bits.

If you can bleed brakes you should be able to change the pipe.

I had to change mine for the MOT - it's a bit of a bugger, but once you get the engine cover off, and the back of the car up on ramps/axle stands, it's a pretty straightforward job...

When you have removed the pipe, then any reasonable garage will make you a replacement. JayBee Motors on Oxford Road were MG Dealers.
I keep the tools and pipe etc. to make my own.

Ahhh yes that is where I bought the rear brake lines for "Blue 33" my MPI. It needed the front to rear and bot rear lines and I then sourced soem S/S braided hoses for the rear. Very helpful chap inded.

were the pipes a good fit? was it fairly straightforward to change the rear pipes, or did you have to remove lots of other bits to get to where you needed to be?

The pipes fitted fine. They come of curse coiled up and oen has to straighten them outt hen bend them to fit which is fiddly. one must not bend them then undo it for than once or twice or the bend hardens and migh crack. This is th nature of the piping. The rear around the negine bay are horrible to replace especially on the F with the resonator box as you cannot get at them. I removed the resonator box whcih is a right pain on it;s own to do. Once you can reach them thne it's just bending them to shape and putting them in place but it's not an easy job really.

The tee pices connector on the engine bulkhead can be a problem to get teh old pipes out. Several have managed to shear off it's stud that retains it. Others have moved it further up. Mine is still in the original place. This was one of the pipes up out of sight at the rear:-

just a slight bend and it started to leak.

That' the Tee piece all cleaned up with new pipes connected.

Oh yes the new copper piping is smaller in diameter than the original. Alsmot forgot. I used some clear PVC tubing split along it's length to go around the new pipe so the under floor clips culd hold it in place. The PVC also protects it from any chaffing.

Your welcome.

The plastic clips for the brake pipe WILL be brittle so go crefully.
