Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

MODIFYING THE CIGAR LIGHTER CIRCUIT

Post by willyphixitt » Thu Aug 06, 2015 5:53 pm

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone out there can help with my problem. My 2005 TF135 has the cigar lighter circuit permanently live and I wish to change that to being live only when the ignition is on. Fuse 1 (10 amps) supplies power to the CL and as I don't have aircon I can use the switched supply at fuse 24. My problem is how to get the connector out of the back of fuse 1 so that I can plug it into the fuse 24 position. I've been fiddling with a jewellers screwdriver and some tweezers trying to find how to disengage the locking tab - but to no avail. Anyone been able to remove the terminal in the fuse pack underneath the dash?

Alternatively, can anyone suggest another way of doing the job?

My reason for all this is so that I can tidy up my leads to the dashcam and satnav and not having to remember to unplug them when away from the car.

You could instead use something like this in fuse 24 to provide a feed to the CL..

Very clever, I would have done the same but made a lead myself using crimp terminals.

Bill, my short answer is that I haven't tried - but I like the idea - and this is how the earlier cars are wired anyway (switched live for the cigarette lighter).

Another solution would be to wire in a hidden, switched auxillary socket for the purposes that you need?

Thanks for all the replies. I like your idea FBOG. I will order a couple. I will hardwire the 3 way cigar lighter adaptor via the piggyback fuse and maybe fit it in the cubby hole forward of the gearstick. I'd drill a small hole at the back of the cubby hole and pass the wiring though it. See photos. Either that or mount it on the passenger side of the console. I will leave the cigar lighter circuit as is. This way will leave the original wiring untouched.
Pity we didn't bump into each other at the MGF20 do - FBOG and TC. It would have been nice to add faces to more names from this website.

Thanks again. Kind regards.

Agreed, but that is the problem bigger meets, unless you plan a meeting point beforehand.
