Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Random Horn sounding

Post by AntonyM » Sun Jul 31, 2016 3:46 pm

Hello

Have just recently acquired a very nice 2005/6 MG TF 135.

I have a problem in that whilst the car is parked, every few hours the horn sounds - not like the alarm going off, it is just a single blast. There doesn't seem to be any sign of an alarm activation and the car is starting and running with no problems at all.

Anyone any ideas for the possible cause ?

Hi and welcome to the forum

Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with the TF

Are you parked close to a microwave oven? Sounds silly I know but we had this problem with our MGF at our last house when we parked the car in the drive next to the kitchen! It seems the alarm is sensitive to the wave emissions from these appliances.

It isn't that close - but that is something to investigate further !

An update - My suspicion is that this may be related to the car battery not having enough charge, and possibly needing replacement.

I used the car for a couple of runs - and had no horn activation again until it had sat back in the garage for a few days. Measured the battery voltage and only 12.1v . Gave the battery a few hours on the charger, and so far - no horn sounding.

Anyone else had random electronic problems caused by the battery running low ?

For the benefit of anyone with a similar problem - a change of battery seems to have solved this issue.

Good choice. The Pektron BCU (body control unit) fitted to your car is a bit problematic when it comes to battery drain. There are known cases where a battery going flat whilst the immobiliser was armed (i e the car is locked) actually bricked the unit and the car could not be started anymore, even after fitting a new battery.
