Hi folks,
as some of you will remember, I had named my Wedgewood SE Stepspeed “Mrs Peebody” due to some considerable coolant leaks. This has now apparently been cured, after resealing the liners, changing the inlet manifold (not just the gasket), and fitting s/s underbody pipes. But obviously she is not eager to have her name changed, as she’s weeing on the drive again! Bad news is: this time it’s gearbox oil !!!
The actual culprit has been found, named and shamed already, it’s the input shaft seal on the gearbox. As there is a bad rattle from that area as well, the springs on the torsion plate are definitely past their sell by date now, no wonder at 102,500 miles.
Both these issues mean I’ll have to split the CVT box from the engine and replace both the plate and the seal. According to the Workshop Manual (hardcopy, Keith, no nasty CD ROM ), this is a subframe out job, which I am not really looking forward to doing. So my actual question is:
Has anyone of you ever managed to change these parts on a CVT car leaving the box in the engine bay? I know it can be done with the clutch on a manual, but the auto box seems to be so much larger. On the other hand, the input shaft on the auto box is much shorter, so maybe that helps …
All ideas welcome!

Hi Mykel,. I feel your pain as this is a job I did last month. I tried to do it without removing the subframe but failed. I took the engine/box out in the end. The box is just too big. I stand to be corrected but I couldn't do it
