Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Cyclinder liners low

Post by Pinfields73 » Thu Nov 24, 2016 7:09 am

Hi,two out of the four of my liners are slightly below the block face ,some blogs say this makes the engine scrap, others say fit the rover gasket not the MLS one,the gasket wasn't leaking, im just replaceing it while I'm doing the clutch.has anyone had any experience with this problem, or what might be the best solution.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I've just had exactly the same problem with my Trophy 160. The liners should protrude slightly above the surface of the block. If they don't, the head gasket wont seal. Some will say the engine is scrap, but there is another solution, which is to fit liner shims in the cylinder block, under the liners themselves. This raises the liners and enables a good seal with the head. I've just had this done on the Trophy and although it's early days, it seems to have done the job. Where in the Midlands are you based? I bought the shims from Matt @ MG Obsession in Burton on Trent. He's a top guy and has used them on his own car with success. The shims are quite cheap - around £30.00 for a set if I remember correctly. However to fit them, it involves removing the liners, so you need to know what you're doing - sadly I don't, which is why I had Andy @ Prestige MG in Tamworth do the work.
Good luck with the engine.
Phil
