Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Cold air filter

Post by hammond » Wed Jan 04, 2017 11:06 pm

I'm looking to fit an upgraded air filter and looking for options.
Has anyone used one of Mike Satur ones as shown here?

http://www.mikesatur.co.uk/index.php?ro ... uct_id=315

Or can anyone recommend others that have helped performance etc

I changed the paper filter for a PiperCross one, and rerouted the pipes to side vents, and fitted scoops.
Slight increase in induction noise at full throttle, I don't think It's made much difference to performance, but I'm now confident I've got the coldest air in the induction at not much extra cost

I fitted a K&N cone in place of the std filter and then used some of the pipes off the old air box to take air from under the car into the engine bay. I have just also fitted scoops

I've just fitted one of these, I'll have to wait a few weeks to see if it makes any difference though.

Do you mind me asking was it easy to do and did you need any additional adaptors etc that it mentions on the product page?

hardest part was removing the engine cover :) I didn't need anything extra. It was a tight squeeze fitting onto existing inlet pipe & it took a bit of fiddling to get everything into place, nothing major & there were no head scratching moments.

I am using a K&N Apollo originally supplied for a ZS180, love the sound.

Trophy K&N cone filters are a bit smaller and cost less yet the Trophy is a 160 ps so why K&N make 2 [TF160] i don't know

Looks similar, I only got the filter to inlet elbow and the actual filter, swapped it for some work I did for someone.

I wouldn't advise anybody to buy one full price to go on to their F/TF, get the correct kit for your car.

The first thing to ask is what car you have?
If its a f then it will make a difference but make sure it's a enclosed filter as the engine bay gets hot! Pipercross do them ! One thing to note with the pipercross one is when you want to clean it (every 2-3 years) your car will be out of action while you try to dry it out! Takes about a week as its heat resistant even in summer!
The tf came with a perfectly good air box just route a pipe to the side vent and change the panel filter not sure if it makes much difference tho

I looked at all the options and decided to opt for a trophy airbox with the two intakes rather than a cone filter of any type, due to the aforementioned heat buildup in the engine bay

I've since wrapped it in heat reflective tape and am directing one intake to under the car and the other to the side vent, I do have a thread going on it somewhere here

Most of the advice I got favoured an enclosed system, or just uprating to the twin intake airbox and then playing with the air intake positions to try and get the coolest air at all times - once I get the last ducting required I'll try and provide pics here so you can see what I mean!

Well I have a mpi f and have fitted piper cross Vader air filter and it does improve things. But I can't say what it did alone as I have full stainless exhaust including manifold & 52mm throttle body and that only brings it up to 128bhp!
So if you want more power get a 160 tf
