MEMS 3 conversion issues, a little help please

Post by nickmitchell38 » Wed Feb 22, 2017 7:22 pm

I have now finally installed the engine with MEMS3 loom, it does appear to be from a MG ZR VVC. I have a problem with the engine bay fan. It runs as soon as ignition is switched on but does not turn off when ignition is turned off. Does anyone know how to overcome this,
Thanks in advance

Obviously the ZR doesn't have an engine bay cooling fan, have you added the wiring into loom to connect the engine bay thermostat into the ECU?

Hi Talkingcars
No I haven't to be honest, spammers and body work for me. Would you happen to know what pin number it goes to and is just a splice into the loom? Thanks

I don't but you'll find the info on the t-bar downloads

Looks like I need to add the engine bay temp sensor to pin 21 of the ECU. I'll have a go at the weekend

Other option is to wire it so it works like a later (2005 on) TF, which dont have an engine bay temperature sensor.
On those cars the engine bay fan operates at the same time as the radiator fan.

Which car is the MEMS3 ECU from? Connect up a diagnostic reader and see what the engine bay temperature is doing... Might be bad earth somewhere?

I think it was from a. ZR but I had no temp gauge, ECM light on, engine bay fan. T300 or OBDll not reading ECU. Gone back to MEMS2 for the time being and will pick the project up later in the year

Hi Nick,

Just re-read the thread. I am not quite sure how you've undertaken the conversion. I guess you were starting with MEMS2J?

Are you using an MGF VVC MEMS3 wiring loom adapted to fit the earlier body loom?

Are you using an MGF/TF MEMS3 VVC ECU, or the original from the ZR160 it came from? The last response would suggest it was a ZR160 ECU - which may help explain some of the problems encountered with the engine bay fan. The ZR didn't have one, and the output plug is wired slightly differently, so the fan is probably on an inappropriate driver?

Best bet here is to swap the ECU for one for the MGF VVC or TF160. Could be either - the earlier version can be re-programmed to the later spec. :)

I have a thread on here regarding building a MEMS3 conversion loom. Its for a 1.8MPi rather than VVC, but in principle, most things are pretty much the same bar the extra drivers for the cam shift etc.

Hi Rob
I picked up the loom and ECU that was supposed to be from a mgf VVC but it turns out to be from a ZR. As you say, no engine bay fan driver. I was starting with a MEMS2. My plan is to source a F or TF ECU at some time but no rush. I will say that I have learnt by the mistakes I have made and will pick the project up later in the year but work and family commitments force it to the back burner. That is temporary I hope
Nick
