Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Electric windows

Post by Rich1965 » Wed Apr 26, 2017 8:47 am

Hi guys this is probably something simple but both the electric windows on my mgf have stop working. we are based in gloucestershire and at the weekend we went to Cornwall everything on the car worked fine. I haven't used the car since until this morning when i tried to open the windows
they didn't work ( i changed both fuses but still no joy) everything esle on the car works like it should.
Any thoughts.

Hi Rich,

I'm also from Gloucestershire!

As to the electric widows if you've checked the fuses the only thing left in my mind would be the motors - I am sure someone who knows a lot more will be along shortly with a few more ideas

What year is the car? It must be something common to both sides if neither are working

There is a fuse which covers both sides in addition to the individual fuses in Mk1 cars. I think fuse 18 in the fuse board under the dash but there is also a fuse link under the bonnet which supplies the window lift relay.

If it is on 51 plate I would assume that MY2001 electronic diagrams should apply?

If so, it could be fuse #6 under steering wheel or fuse Link #3 in engine compartment fusebox. However fuse link #3 powers engine bay cooling fan, so I would assume something else would not work too. Of course relay itself can be proven faulty, but fuse check would be first thing to do.

So a dumb question as I know window motors suck a lot of power,

How big is fuse link #3? If you have just parked and the engine bay fan is running and you and you passenger both decide to put your windows up at the same time, can the fuse link cope with all 3 at once?

Fuse Link 3 is 30 amps. Each motor has separate fuse of 10 amps and fan has its separate fuse of 10 amps. So link 3 should cope with all three working.
However link 3 also powers Heated Rear Screen if you have one. This HRW has separate fuse of 25 amps.
So if you decide to load all four at once there is a possibility you might overload the link fuse.

Not that I think it is this, but on my old F I had an issue like this, that traced back to the actual switches (both of them). Replaced them and all was fixed.
