Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Need to get an OBD 2 reader, lots on fleeced bay with varying prices. Considering getting one with live feed (and not wireless). Any recommendations would be appreciated

I got a cheap reader for around a tenner and the dashcommand app for iPhone and that does me fine for engine info and code reading - I don't know if I used a pscan I would get different codes, maybe someone at MGs in the park will have one to run a comparison!

Same for me.
I got a bluetooth 'copy' ELM for around a tenner from eBay and Torque Pro android phone app for less than a fiver. That combination seems to work fine on every car I've thrown at it inc my own '05 1.6 MGF/TF and '14 Cooper S.
Lots of engine useful info (inc coolant temp) and the ability to cancel fault codes.
These devices can be wired, bluetoothed or wi-fied and there are other apps, I believe, for tablet + laptop.

Yeah mine was also a ELM copy for around a tenner and read coolant temp etc too - my F is however mems3 so I doubt it'd work with mems 1.9/2. All in all for a total £20 investment it exceeds expectations

Worth mentioning as well that I used mine on my cousins mkiv Ibiza 1.4 and it read the codes from his with no problem as well when he had an issue with his brake lights

I have a scangauge 2 semi permanently mounted on the steering column in my ZS, would work in a MEMS 3 F or TF.

It's expensive but quality costs.

Bluetooth OBD2 reader - check the usual sources (busy forums, social media groups) - for a reliable model / link.

Combine this with the Torque Pro App on Android / iPhone. A brilliant App which is only a couple of quid and serves 95% of purposes. :)

If you are going to use it on several cars and performing more detailed investigations on a regular basis, then it will be worth investing in something more professional.

Worth mentioning as well that the Bluetooth devices are for android and the wi fi devices are for iOS or any Apple product basically! I got a Bluetooth one originally only to find I needed a wi fi one to work with my iPhone
