Exhaust Manifold Replacement MGF vvc

Post by Cromar » Mon Aug 07, 2017 10:33 pm

The flange on the exhaust manifold to the flexi downpipe has sheared off on my MGF vvc, so I need to replace the exhaust manifold.

I'd very much appreciate any information regarding this job - ie, where can I get a replacement manifold (4 stud), is it possible to do this job with the head on and the engine in the car? Or do I have to lift the head with all that that involves?

All information gratefully received!

I am in West Aberdeenshire.

Thanks!

Does the car have air-conditioning?

From your region I guess not but it's important to your question.
Due to my air-conditioning compressor I found that I needed to fit my new engine WITHOUT the exhaust manifold fitted,
then bolt on the compressor and finally add the manifold. Based on this I can say it is possible to remove and refit the exhaust manifold without removing the head. Though mine is a standard 120 PS car, I can't see how the vvc would be different in that area.

Those exhaust heat shields are very bl**dy fiddly and time consuming, but it CAN be done.

The reason I ask about air-con is that it relocates the alternator, and removing the alternator first on an air-con car is again fiddly and time consuming.

Thanks for quick reply re exhaust manifold fitting.
No, its an old vvc (1997) - I don't think it has air con (I've just bought it).

Good news however if its the case I don't have to lift the head!

I'm much obliged for your kind reply.

I suggest ebay for the parts or MGFnTFbitz in Glossop.

Access to get it off will be from both the top and the bottom.

I would suggest giving the manifold studs and those locating the heat shields a good soak in plus-gas before you start

I changed the exhaust manifold on my mk1 without removing the head.
