Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Rear Sub Frame

Post by Macski » Wed Nov 01, 2017 9:10 pm

Hi everyone, just reg with hope of some advice

I am thinking of buying a 51 MGF, in 2015 the car had an advisory of corrosion on the sub frame it says it has not been seriously weakened. Now it passed its MOT in 2016 and this year with not mention of corrosion.

So does anyone think it has been repaired, is it reparable?

How so I check?

Hi and welcome to the forum

Sub frame corrosion can look a lot worse than it actually is and is normally an easy repair.

Best bet is to have a good look at the subframe from underneath and at the 4 mounts.

I had the same advisory a couple of years ago. I had a good look and it was surface corrosion, no holes or anything looking like it was on its way out. Cleaned it up, wire brushed it and put on two coats of Hammerite. Not had an advisory since and did get a pleasant reaction from the tyre fitter when have new Toyos fitted he was quite impressed with the gleaming black subframes
