centre console sticky covering

I have a black centre console and it has some of the black dull sticky finish coming away. Underneath is shiney black and I wonder if the dull covering is easy to remove and would I have a complete shiney black console or will it ruin it?

Hi cococola. I had this on my 2001 1.6 F mk2. I think it's a rubbery kind of (I presume) anti-dazzle coating that ends up looking a little tired after a decade.
I took my console off and spent ages with hot soapy water, scotch pad plastic blade and brake cleaner to take it back to black plastic that was a little shiny but looked a whole lot better. I didn't find it an easy task tbh.
(I daresay you could then spray it with a matt black plastic paint that wouldn't look so grubby and should last much longer if you wanted it to. I thought reverting to plain black plastic was a definite improvement in my case...)

My yellow console had the same covering on it. I just scraped the covering off with a Stanley blade, it didn't take long.

I just bought a spare one :) but I've cut it up now

Just remembered, I used some nail varnish remover on a scouring pad too.
