Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Direction Indicator Fault

Post by olde-grumpy » Thu Nov 09, 2017 5:03 pm

The other day my direction indicators ceased to function. Likewise the hazard warning flashers. However the indicators flash when I lock the car.

Thus far I have changed the flasher unit; checked, found to be okay but changed anyway, the two fuses related to the indicators; checked for obvious loose wires.

Can anyone give me a clue as to where I might look next?

It maybe a fault with the stalk.
IIRC he alarm unit flashes the indicators when you set the alarm.

Are your brake lights, reversing lights working ok? Worth checking as we had an issue last year where the electrics were doing strange things and it turned out to be (I can't fully remember what the auto electrician said) a ring behind the ignition barrel.

What do you mean by the flasher unit. Iirc it's built into the hazard switch, that'd be my first port of call.

Thanks for the responses.

If the fault is in the stalk then only the indicator function is effected.

The hazard switch also fails to get the indicators flashing.

The Small black box on the internal fuse board is, according to my wiring diagramme, a flasher unit.

I'd still try replacing the hazard switch

The mystery deepens.Today I gathered meter, looks, torch and with many layers of jackets I headed out to sort this issue. I started by turning on the ignition and 'indicating' with a view to rattling connectors to see if that provided instant clues... they worked. I had wondered if I had replaced the flasher unit with the old flasher unit and thrown the new one away. But no. the little *****ers have decided to work.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you check them with the engine running? When we had the issues I mentioned above everything worked fine without the engine running, but played up when the engine was running.
