Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.
Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.
Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway!
Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Alternator
My alternator has just spat its dummy had to call out the AA out to get home, question is which type do I have looked on euro car parts site and they list 3 the car is a 51 plate 1.8 vvc mgf

I think your car will be close to the change over.
Best bet is to look at the one on the car, especially at the wiring to see how many wires come from it.

Home to black Alfa 159 3.2 V6 Q4, blue MGZR160, green MGF VVC and grey MGF 1.8i, and red MG Maestro T16.

The changeover was MY2000 hence it was built with YLE102430. Bosch 0 124 225 011. This remained until the end of MGTF Production in 2005
The Europarts site gives RTX part numbers. They are Chinese Reverse Engineered (Copy) Parts of uncertain quality and higher prices. There is no cross reference to MGR Part Numbers.
Rimmers offer a "Aftermarket" part (of unspecified origin) however B&G have New at £179 or Suffix Z at £118. Not sure of the meaning of the "Z" but would expect it to be again Aftermarket.
I would go for a secondhand original part from Martin Smith of College Motors, Burford before an Aftermarket.
I am at present giving our 2000 F Steptronic a Major Service. As New OEM Parts are becoming more difficult to obtain it may be time for me to buy a new alternator and fit it keeping the old one as a spare before it fails.

Thanks for the input today, I managed to get the unit out today without any major problems it turns out the unit fitted is a Bosch as per Geoff.f's post above. I have had to order a replacement from Euro car parts as I am trying to sell the car and need it to be running so could not wait for a unit by post
