Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Does stalling damage an F

Post by RobboMC » Mon Apr 16, 2018 4:01 am

My son is approaching 16 years of age when down under he is allowed a learners permit; and of course he is hanging our to drive our F.

Will stalling the engine do any damage to the timing belt, tensioner or other parts of the engine?

I have a new clutch with just 12,000 miles on it so that should be OK.

No worries, these engines are quite fool-proof, as handing mine over to my daughter’s boyfriend four days after he passed his licence has proved impressively. Daughter included, by the way.

He drove the car for a total 3,800 kms over the summer. No problems whatsoever.

BSM used the Austin Metro and the Rover Metro for the entire life of their production selling on cars after 9 months so had many many examples with the K series engine.
Both they and the police had one modification to the exhaust to help restart the car after stalling, there was a ball valve in the exhaust to reduce back pressure.

However it is a myth that learners stall a lot, especially if their instructor trains them properly in correct clutch use in the early days. In my ten years as an instructor I never had a problem with stalling and engine damage.
