Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. Replacing rear plastic window with BAS heated glass

Post by Green Squirrel » Tue Oct 22, 2019 5:47 pm

After almost 25 years excellent service my plastic rear window split!! So I decided to replace it with the BAS heated glass unit - can't be difficult especially as BAS say in their blurb that it comes with all parts and full fitting instructions!!

Unit arrived today excellent packaging and all bits there EXCEPT fitting instructions. So quick e-mail to them and I get the following reply:-

Hi Ted,
None of our hoods come with fitting instructions as we would always recommend a qualified fitter carries out the work.
Thanks
Becky

So my question the forum is anyone done this and how did it go?

Hi Ted I have replaced a back window but not the zip part I was lucky in it was the same type of zip so did not need changing!
First release the front catches the move to the back and then pop the catches that hold the back of the hood down (as if you were going for the engine cover)
Around the edge of the hood there are lots of rivets these are what holds the fabric to the frame.
If the zip is the same and okay this all you need to drill out. I only replaced mine with another plastic one so this is as far as I know but assume it will be similar.
If I remember mine had all the holes in the fabric so it was just a question of lining things up and re riveting.
I am sure someone will have done the glass version that can help.
Good luck
Paul

Are you just replacing the screen or the complete hood?

If it is the complete hood it is the same as any other hood, I followed how to guides found on the web.

Does it come with the fabric surround?

Incidentally my BAS complete hood doesn't have a zip around the rear screen, it is sown in.

Wow what's your secret(s)

My newish plastic rear window got splits after about 6 years. Got a new one ( fitted it myself ) last Xmas
and already it's showing signs of wear from being under the retracted hood. I unzip and lay it flat EVERY time I put the hood down,
but it still seems to get rubbed somehow.

At this rate it's change the timing belt AND rear screen every 4 years.

There is one car here down under that wins the F class of concourse in Sydney whenever they enter, and the roof of that car hasn't been down in it's whole 20 year life. But what's the point of that????? :sf:

Regularly polish the plastic with graygate polish to keep it soft and supple.

Yes it comes complete with all fixings - I have not actually fitted mine yet - due to a nasty bout of flu - but hope to do it next week.

Hopefully the BAS window will zip in using the half of the zip attached to the hood itself?

Hope you feel better soon Ted - and fingers crossed, it won't be too difficult for you. :)
