Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Ride height on MGF

Post by Strat61 » Wed Aug 05, 2020 11:08 am

Hi All, is there an optimum ride height for a 2001 MGF? My local garage says my car needs lowering as it’s too bumpy. Any advice will be much appreciated.
Cheers

The ride height should be 368mm ± 10 mm at 17°C unless you have a Trophy which is 348mm. This is measured from the centre of the wheel to the wheel arch. Heights are measured on the front wheels only.

Just lowering the height will not alter the ride but may affect your tracking and increase uneven wear on the tyres.

Many Thanks Keith, it pays to ask the people who know.
Thanks again

When they say it's bumpy do they mean the ride is firm or bouncy? If it's firm and you feel every bump in the road the suspension spheres may be at the end of their life.

It's a 2001 car, those spheres are 19 years old, of course they're at the end of their life.

If your garage has suggested lowering will fix the bumpy ride then find another garage!!!

The only thing that will fix your bumpy ride is a spring conversion kit or the replacement spheres offered by Ian Kennedy.

Eventually this will happen and you will have no choice but to replace the suspension:

At 20 years of age, any car that still has spheres is a time bomb waiting to go off,
I was lucky this happened only 10 miles from home, I had been last month 500 miles away in the car

...... My local garage .....
Are they a MG specialist or just a local independent?

With the unusual suspension set up on a F it's worth speaking to someone who knows them. Where in the south east are you?

Just replaced the Hydragas spheres on mine (a job I've put off some while). They are the "Kennedy Spheres" - but other folks are available to re-gas the nitrogen (which will *transform* the ride back to what it should be!)

Standard ride height at the front should indeed be 368mm from front wheel centre to wheel arch lip vertically above. Lowered cars (shortened knuckles) typically have a ride height of 340mm. Line pressure in the Hydragas system should be approximately 400 psi.
