Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Dehumidifiers?

Post by cococola » Thu Dec 10, 2020 12:34 pm

My Mgf lives mostly on my drive and although I have a hard top fitted in the winter,I get alot of damp/condernsation inside the vehicle.I do try to control the odd drips into the car when it rains and wonder if anybody has tried a dehumidifier or any other gadget to help the overnight damp please?

How much damp/condensation are you getting? From very recent experience, water can get in through the bulkhead, ventilation system airbox and via door seals and poorly adjusted side glass... and fixing these issues will likely solve the underlying problem :)

Ive removed and resealed the airbox and refitted the drivers door seal button clip which cured those leaks previously. I find with the hard roof fitted, that I get constant condensation on the rear screen and front screen especially. I do have a small thumb sized gap between the front of the hard roof/passenger door glass which I cant see how to cure other than using a small piece of cloth to plug that hole. Im sure that the glass is adjusted fine because it closes tightly on the soft roof.
I adore Mgf ownership except for the damp/winter times of the year.

I have a couple of 4 pint milk cartons halved lengthways and filled with rock salt. I dry this out by leaving it on a radiator for a couple of days, it then sits in the car for about a month before being dried out again.

BBQ charcoal works well as a dehumidifier as well.

I put a dehumidifier in the passenger foot well at this time of year. The cable goes through that small gap at the bottom of the door glass. I'd not thought of the other solutions of rock salt and charcoal but I think that's what I'll be using in the other MG!!
Although we don't have leaks, the high humidity led to some mould forming last year without the dehumidifier and drying the air has stopped that.

Good thoughts - what about harvesting a bunch of silica bags that often come with deliveries?
