Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Jiggle valve on early MGF VVC from 1995

Post by frankedwinsson » Thu Aug 25, 2022 3:00 pm

I am getting confused.... :-( Is there only one jiggle valve on the VVC (at expansion tank) and not a second one at inlet manifold ??

One at the other end of the thin return feed pipe to the expansion tank and one at the inlet manifold.

Thank you so much. In the workshop manual, it looks as the VVC-engine doesnt have the one at the inlet manifold... :-(
I get a lot of pressure and airbubbles in the expansion tank and suspect that the jiggle valves are stuck.
- Can both jiggle valves be replaced, or do I have to replace the hoses as well?

The jiggle valves often become blocked up over time - particularly if there has ever been a head gasket event (nameless) - the ball then gets stuck and they don't jiggle. They are very easy to clean and one is very easy to access, but the inlet manifold one means removing the inlet manifold.
You can check it (I.M. one) is functioning in situ quite easily by removing the hose and placing a conveniently longer hose on the manifold hose tail so that gently blowing should allow air past the ball if it is free to move, but sucking should cause the ball to block the pipe.

I have often seen it suggested that one removes the jiggle valves, is this good advice?
