mg tf epas main and sub torque sensor circuit failure

Have problems with the power steering light being on, checked the the large fuse cleaned it all still the same, anyway bought Pscan tool plugged into the car and got this (mg tf epas main and sub torque sensor circuit failure) could anybody help please. Robert

I am pretty sure that the offending sensor is deep inside the power steering unit, and I can recollect visiting the guys who made that unit back in 2000 or thereabouts. It might be worth trying to remove the electrical connector on the steering rack, examine the condition/cleanliness of the terminals clean any you can access and replace. As you probably know, the electronic module controlling the EPAS sits above/behind the glove box, which is easy to remove (4 screws). The same inspection-clean-replace job would be worth trying on that connector.

Thank You for your reply, I have tried that cleaning the connectors with electoral spray still no good, I have unplugged the 2 connectors from the epas ecu when the steering has failed and then reconnecting them, doing that I get the steering back for a while. I think it could be the loom to the motor/pump or maybe the EPAS ECU itself, what do you think?

Hi 1030bob I would guess that the fact that you did get the steering (assistance) back "for a while", presumably after one of the unplug-clean-replug cycles, indicates that there was a bad contact somewhere, which has now "gone bad" again. At least you now know that the problem resides at the EPAS ECU end of that cable, either in the ECU Unit itself, or at that end of one of those two cables. Perhaps the next step is to attempt to unplug only one of those two cables, then re-connect & try for EPAS assistance, if no joy, then try the same unplug& re-plug on the other. I know it is difficult to handle one connector without disturbing the other, but worth trying, I guess.

My other thought is: Does the EPAS Fail warning light go out when the assistance comes back. If it DOES, try wiggling cables one at a time to see if moving either causes the fail light to illuminate again.

There are various companies selling secondhand parts welovemgfs (in Walsall) are offering a comlete EPAS unit with ECU etc for £80, if all else fails, see below:
