Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Gear selector

Post by douglas37 » Tue Apr 04, 2023 12:28 pm

Hi, I have a 1997 MGF.
Broke down as I was unable to select gears. Garage says I need a new "gear selector", but weren't keen to fit it as they admitted they didn't know how to fit one on this type of car. They also think clutch needs replaced.

1) Can anyone give me an estimate of how many hours this will require to fit?
2) Can anyone recommend a garage with MG experience in south east Scotland/ Lothians?

Thanks

How far are you from Dreadnought Garage? there's not much the Luti family don't know about MG Rovers.

Sounds like the garage you have been talking to a) know sod all about MGFs and b) don't want the job.

It may well be that one of the gearchange cables has come adrift. That's not a huge job to fix, if you know what you're doing. Bin the garage and find someone who knows what they're doing. At least they will be able to properly determine the cause of the problem.

Agreed - likely a problem with one of the gear change cables - the favourite place for these to cause problems is at the gearbox end where the ends can pop off, or the ball joint at the end of the cable comes off the cable (necessitating cable replacement).

Unlikely that there is anything more significant than that going on...

The subject of gear selection problems is VERY well described, and all the solutions explained, in Roger Parker's book which I do not have to hand (away from home at the moment) but I think it is tilted "MGF and TF Restoration Manual"
A picture of the most relevant page is below. I took a copy to help someone else who had similar problems, so that is with me here on my PC.

Roger Parker's other book on MGF/TF is "EVERYDAY MODIFICATIONS FOR YOUR MGF AND TF"
It also covers gear-change problems and improvements in great detail:
Pages 177 - 181.
