Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Hi all - a huge delay since I wrote but there is progress!
We finally got it recovered to Maypole Motors 1.7 miles away after some shenanigans, we eventually got the AA to do it for £106. You are right RobboMC they say it is the starter motor, but they have quoted £395 for this £240 for the part and their supplie is confused as there are 2 options related to amperages.

On eBay we found the part for £29, the seller says it was retrieved from a Trophy in 2001 said it would work, but clearly looking at the pictures there seems to be a manufacturer stamp 01-04-12, so we challenged that and the answer was not clear.

Sorry Rob I gave up on trying to sort this out myself as we have so many other issues....maybe I should have tried harder myself!

Any advice anyone? The car is now in the garage I told them I would check, they have scheduled in the 28th to do this work at 2 hours labour.

Help :-)

Cheers,
John

p.s. at least we had fun gettng it onto the AA truck at 8:30am with neighbours and parents and kids on the way to school watching, smiling and friendly comments!

Have a look at Rimmers website, it tells you which starter fits which VIN numbers: https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID018962

I mentioned the starter on my Tf is a bit lazy to Darren at 'Bitz whilst I was inquiring about a new T bar cover. He greatly surprised me by selling me a tested starter motor for £ 10 plus shipping. I will swap it over in the summer when i do my cambelt. Apparently the starters on Fs and TFs are quite robust so there is more supply than demand hence he has sold some off cheap to regain shelf space. He mentioned he still has 2 left at £ 10 a go. I dont know what the carriage would be as I bought mine with several other parts.

Hi we bought a starter motor for £97 (many thanks for the website suggestion, the posts seem to have disappeared!) but the garage then said the exhaust system was strangely completely filled with water and after another hours investigation (3 hours total so far) they are now saying we probably need a new fuel pump (no explanation for the water), we found one for less than £100 but then there is labour - they said they could not source one anywhere. They say it starts with easystart but not without. Any ideas, as the bill seems to be shooting up?

Were the previous posts deleted as I named the garage?

I would recommend taking it to one of the established MGF mobile mechanics that several people on the forum have used. The trouble with generic local garages who don't have specific experience is that they can only take a poke and hope approach, replacing anything they think of until it is hopefully fixed. A specialist will ultimately be cheaper and provide a certain result as they will be able to draw on their experience and only replace the required parts.

I think your MGF is a Mk2 as you mentioned it is a 2002 car. It should therefore have this type of in-tank fuel pump if so.https://www.mgfntfbitz.co.uk/shop/fuel- ... nder-unit/.

I think first though you really need to diagnose whether the fuel pump works or whether the garage are just waffling and grasping at straws before you throw money at this. I would recommend some self help here; establish, through use of the Search feature here and on the other dedicated MGF forums, how to access the connections to the fuel pump. Apply + 12 volts to the correct terminal and see whether the pump is moving fuel. There are ways of measuring this, all information is available and this is very much DIY territory.
