Forum rules
Not many rules really, this board being aimed at technical issues, it shouldn't fall foul (hopefully) of some of the more personal issues that can affect forums.

Rule 1 - Is that you need to think very carefully before posting anything technical or asking anything technical relating to the security system of the car - See 'Security Issues' sticky for more info.

Rule 2 - We (MGF Register) do not support copyright infringement and therefore references to CD ROM, PDF versions or paper copies of the workshop manual (for instance) should not be posted on the forum. We don't want to get into trouble and we'd rather sell you a genuine hard copy through our Regalia shop anyway! :)

Because advice is honestly and freely given in this technical section, much of it will be amateur experienced based, so any information is given in good faith and is not guaranteed as correct.

Passive Key Entry - True Keyless Entry

Post by Leeaw85 » Wed Apr 19, 2023 1:48 pm

Hi all,

Have been pondering my next project (as always)

Has anyone attempted or also thought about adding passive key Entry to their car? So it unlocks as you get close and relocks as you leave. Would be nice to stroll up and just get in the car.

I have a LR with keyless entry and also a Mini Countryman. It's a nice feature I guess, but reduces the security of your vehicle.

The one concern other than security (luckily tea leaves are not hugely interested in our MGs currently), is how one would integrate this into the existing vehicle security system? You cannot bypass the standard SCU, as this sends a code to the engine ECU (MEMS) to switch off the immobiliser. You'd need to re-map the ECU to remove this feature - but then you are not looking at a cheap 50 quid add-on...

I did think it wouldn't be as straight forward as I hoped :-)

I'd be happy enough with just the passive entry in all honesty, coupled with the remote boot mod could be very handy not having to fish around pockets and the car to see where I last left the physical key

The remote boot opener would be useful - but you'll need to install a central locking motor or solenoid to do this :)
